United Arab Emirates: Malaria and Vector Borne Diseases in Humanitarian Crises workshop

We still have a few places left on the The MENTOR Initiative's 5 day Malaria and Vector Borne Diseases in Humanitarian Crises workshop to be held in Dubai, UAE from 18th - 22nd April 2016.

This intensive and engaging course will train programme managers and technical staff in how to develop and implement evidence-based malaria and vector borne disease control programmes.It will give you a comprehensive insight in to the operational and practical ways the full range of vector borne diseases (VBD) can be controlled during humanitarian crises including malaria, dengue fever, Zika, leishmaniaisis and fly control among many others.

Since 2002, MENTOR has trained over 1500 participants from National and International NGOs, UN agencies, Ministries of Health, donors, students, suppliers and the media.
Building on the success on the "Malaria in Humanitarian Crisis" training this new course is designed to introduce integrated malaria and vector borne diseease management, specifically to strengthen the capacity of agencies to implement effective and coordinated malaria and vector borne disease control activities, either as a focus or as part of broader disease control activities. It is aimed at equipping both clinical and non-clinical field and national/HQ staff with the key skills required to identify needs and develop, prioritise and implement evidence-based surveillance, prevention, diagnosis and treatment programmes for vector borne diseases including malaria.

Malaria & Vector Borne Diseases course details
The 5 day course is taught by a team of highly experienced specialist experts from the relevant teaching fields. It is designed to be highly participatory, with a problem-based approach to teaching and learning. Throughout the workshop participants will be encouraged to actively take part and to share their experiences and lessons learned. Teaching methodologies used will include lectures, problem solving exercises, role playing and practical demonstrations including Rapid Diagnostic Tests, clinical danger signs, Indoor Residual Spraying and larviciding.
By the end of the course participants will be able to:

• Identify risk factors for vector borne disease infections and outbreaks including Malaria, Dengue, Zika, Sleeping sickness, Leishmaniasis, Rift Valley and many others.

You will gain an understanding of the epidemiology of different types of diseases and prioritise key control measures

• Understand the principles of vector borne disease control including, as appropriate, surveillance and monitoring, case management (diagnosis, treatment and patient care) and effective personal and community protection strategies.

• Prepare and plan for effective priority interventions for the acute emergency context and modify programme approaches according to changes in the situation as the situation moves towards post emergency phase to reconstruction.

• Determine the most effective combination of tools and coordination of efforts with national and international partners to address the crises.

• Monitor and evaluate the impact of interventions.

• Identify operational and technical problems requiring field research and quantify project needs for proposal and budgeting development**.**
